 Our time has come!

Disc golf in Wichita and around the world is swelling in popularity, being called by many the fastest growing "new" sport.  And, relatively speaking, this forty something sport is still very new.

And that is what makes it exciting as more people finally discover what we already know; this game is a fun, challenging and rewarding sport! It i s far more than a leisurely stroll in the park and tossing a "Frisbee" around. (Not to disparage a fun past time enjoyed by millions over the years).

This is the time the Air Capital Disc Golf Club has been working towards. Our prime directive has been to promote and support the sport we all love to play so much. And we, along with other local clubs, state associations and the international PDGA are now seeing the blossoming of the fruits of our labor. But, this is only the beginning of the best of times for disc golf.

To build disc golf into a self-sustaining sport with a lasting place in the annals of professional and amateur sports we must become clear on what we need to do to feed the swell and ride this wave of popularity into the future. We must be dedicated and willing to put forth the effort to do what is needed to accomplish this lofty long term goal and the short term goals that are necessary to get us there.

This is what is at stake. This is our opportunity.

The excitement and energy that has kept so many of us playing for decades now and has caused so many more of us to join the ranks of the disc golf community is now spreading. And it is this energy that we can harness to light a fire under the powers that be to get with the program and provide more opportunities for more people to discover and enjoy playing disc golf in Wichita and South-central Kansas.

It is this energy that we can direct to bring more people into the club to join us in accomplishing great things for disc golf and building the sport for future generations. And, in coming together as a community of disc golf enthusiast who love to have a good time - competing with, learning from and just spending time together.

Most importantly, it is our privilege to fuel the movement with more

·         Exhibitions to introduce disc golf to others

·         Clinics/Workshops to help disc golfers from the novice to the pro to improve their game

·         Events, large and small, to feed disc golfer’s hunger for competition and camaraderie

·         New ideas to inspire and encourage others to join our cause

This is why

The Air Capital Disc Golf Club is holding a meeting this Saturday, February 15 to hear from YOU!

Please Join Us! as the ACDGC Board is ready to listen to what you have to say and see what you have to offer in support of Disc Golf and the Disc Golf Community.

This is where, when and how

Come to the Water Center meeting room at the Herman Hill Disc Golf Park, enter through the south door. Meeting begins at 12 noon and will continue through 2 p.m.

The meeting will be structured in a way to maximize the opportunity for ordered and focused input from everyone who wishes to speak. If you can’t make the beginning then come when you can. Come even if you don’t think you have anything to say, you might be surprised and, at a minimum, you will have a chance to learn more about where we are going as a club and what you can do to help us get there.

Due to the recent snow storm the ACDGC Board has decided it is best that we postpone the club meeting scheduled for this Saturday, February 8th.

The meeting was called to get your input on short term and long term goals for the Air Capital Disc Golf Club and we feel that the more people who participate the better.

Hopefully, this meeting will be rescheduled for a Saturday within this month, maybe even next week. It will depend on Water Center availability. Notifications will be posted through email,  ACDGC website, ACDGC facebook page and KDGA forum.

Our regularly scheduled weekly mini-tourney (league play) WILL be held Saturday, Feb. 8th at Herman Hill as the club has always committed to making this available regardless of the weather for die hard players. It will be at 2:00 p.m., singles play, from the red tees (or as close as we can come to them). As usual, please arrive early to sign up.

2014 Ice Bowl Wrap Up

We had 71 players in attendance for our 25th annual Wichita Ice Bowl. The temp topped out at 63 degrees. Believe it or not, it was not as warm as last year, but the wind was considerably less. The sun was shining and it was a fantastic day for throwing discs. Channel 12 came out and their video coverage was dubbed Ice Bowl turns into Nice Bowl

A big thanks to those who helped with preparing the course. Ryan Ashby, Jerry Sherwood, Ty Herrington, Jason Childre, Stephen Volbruck, Mike Schoenhofer. I think it made a huge difference and the course ended up playing pretty well, considering the rough nature. Mike Master-Of-The-Mulligan Schoenhofer ended up buying the win in open with a score of 99. Chris Smith won Masters also with 99. Top round was 47: 1st round Chris Dendurent, 2nd round Mike Schoenhofer. Am top score bounty was won by Andrew Riner with a 102, including a 2nd round 49. I witnessed Ryan Clements score 6 birdies in 8 holes and shoot 50 in the second round (110 total) to win intermediate. I also witnessed Derek Dean, first round, throw his first ace on hole 14 with a Stiletto, tightly skipped around the cedar tree guarding the basket. He earned $122 for this perfect shot! Im missing a few pro scorecards, but a few other notable stats. Nothing higher than a 3 on the card both rounds for Mike Schoenhofer. Ryan Doyle and Curtis Broadhurst both scored 2 both rounds on hole 18. Big thanks to everyone who brought baskets and took them to and fro the course. Ryan Doyles 8 foot tall basket on hole 17 was an absolute riot! Scores ranged from 2 to 8 on that hole. Lyndell Masters and Todd Potter scored 2 on it both rounds. Didnt see any 2s on the 3 toughest holes: hole 11 (about 600 feet), hole 3, and hole 16. Most improved player from last year had to be Gustavo, shooting 27 throws better!

There are a lot of people who helped this event come together and succeed. Thanks to Bob and Jerry and Doug for helping me prior to the event. Thanks to everyone who helped with registration, adding cards, and awards, and especially to Bob for all the work he put in. Thanks to everyone bringing the great food. We had lots of chili, chicken chili, beef stew, and it was all very good!  Thanks most of all to the ladies who helped prepare lunch and clean up afterwards. That would be Pam Paulson, Sandy Volbruck, Melissa Speer, and Rachel Safarik. You gals are greatly appreciated!

The biggest story of this years Ice Bowl may be the generous donations given. It is growing by leaps and bounds, and very much so this year. Not counting mulligan sales, here are some of the donations that were received: Buddy Kassner donated $200 even though he could not attend the event. Thanks again, Buddy! Mark Wilson (also did not play) donated $105, acquired $25 from US Tool Grinding, kicked in some raffle prizes, and brought in almost $600 worth of free meals from Freddys Frozen Custard! Ducks Flying Discs donated $100 and coupons for the player packs. Play It Again Sports donated $100. Thanks very much for those seeking outside sponsorship. Sherwood Realty donated $100. Bob Decker donated $100 as he has every year. Ace Mason showed up and gave us some money. Bill Paulson and Miranda donated their winnings. David Felts and several others added some donation to their entry fees. We had 9 CTP prizes and 25 different raffle prizes. Some of those contributing to that were Bob Decker ($250+ worth of discs donated), the ACDGC, Crispin Carrasco / Hand Eye, Brian Thompson, Jerry Sherwood, and Mark Wilson. Darren Bottom won the basket and says he will give it away at the Little River Food Drive next Saturday.

Over $2000 was brought in from raffle / mulligan sales and entry fees alone. A huge thanks is deserved for everyone who attended and contributed to our effort this year. The total still needs checked, finalized, and approved by the board, but I can say that we are looking very competitive with last years $3400 record, which is completely awesome! Thanks for being so generous and helping to feed those less fortunate. Every year I look forward to being a part of such an amazing effort and it just keeps getting better! Congrats to the winners and I hope everyone had a good time.

Until we do it again next year,

Michael Schoenhofer
Tournament Director

Next weekend, both Saturday (1-18) and Sunday (1-19), work will be done on holes 11 and 12. We will be working on the north end near 53rd street. My guess is that it will still be too muddy to drive in from the parking lot, so please dont cut ruts by doing so. We will start by 9 am each day. Any and all help wold be appreciated, even if it is only for an hour or two.

This is a great way to add another complete course to the area. About 13 of the holes are already redone.

I am very pleased to announce the candidates for the Air Capital Disc Golf Club 2014 board of directors. That being said, I am also a bit saddened to have to include with that the formal announcement that two of the current, long serving, board members have asked to step down from their post due to increasing demands on their time from other important interest and obligations.

Current President Michael Schoenhofer and Vice President Bill Paulson will not seek another term in 2014. Both of these good men have played disc golf and been actively supporting, participating and volunteering in countless ways with the club for many, many, years. I hope you will join us at our Annual Meeting at the Water Center in Herman Hill Park, Saturday, January 11, 2014 as the club and board members honor their service and dedication to the sport we all enjoy so much.

We open the Water Center Meeting Room at 12 noon and will provide the traditional fried chicken meal for as long as it lasts (rsvp if possible). The meeting will start at 1 p.m. with the annual reports followed by the election of officers for 2014 and an agenda which includes a look ahead to 2014 and a look back on the years of service from Mike and Bill. It’s a meeting I don’t think you will want to miss.

I am pleased to say we have a full slate of candidates ready to step up and serve on the board in 2014. You will probably be familiar with the five returning officers. You may or may not know the other two. They are relatively new members but are well qualified and enthusiastic to serve on the board and move the club ahead on meeting some lofty goals.

The candidates for positions on the 2014 ACDGC Board are

  • President: Jerry Sherwood
  • Vic President: Ty Herrington
  • Secretary: Taylor Camp
  • Treasurer: Robert Decker
  • Park Liaison: Russell Trice
  • Events Coordinator: Mike Speer
  • Communications Director: Doug Dick

I will post/send out another communication tonight or so to better acquaint you with Ty and Doug and provide links where you can access all the candidates required bio sheets that were filled out for nomination to the 2014 ACDGC board.

Remember, our by-laws require that we have at least 20% of current members participate in person or via proxy ballot in order to conduct the election of officers. It is vitally important that you find a way to participate. Proxy ballots are available online here or you can get one on request from any current board member. Scanned copies can be returned via email or delivered in person to a current officer or give original to any attending member to deliver at the annual meeting.

Only current 2013-14 members are eligible to vote. But, the meeting is open for all to attend. RSVP to events@aircapitaldiscgolfclub.org by 1/09/14 if at all possible.

Thank you,
Jerry Sherwood
ACDGC Communications Director

On Tuesday, July, 2, 2013 the Wichita Eagle's reporter Joanna Chadwick and Photjournalist Travis Heying tagged along with players who were going to the AM Worlds in Emporia in the coming week as the foursome participated in regular league play at Herman Hill.

The result was a very lengthy and enjoyable piece in the Friday, July 5th print and online editions.

It was informative, supportive and entertaining and should be a great assest as we continue to work tgowards our goal of getting more disc golf courses into Wichita and area public parks; with an eye to having enough championship level courses to host PDGA AM Worlds sometime in the future.

Check out the article by following the link below.

Remember, everytime you join us in regular league play you help us provide the resources needed to  continue to bring more disc golf venues to the Greater Wichita Metropolitan Area.

2013 Wichita Meltdown, Sunday Feb. 17

C Tier Event sanctioned by PDGA and KDGA

And Don't Miss out on the Flx Start Doubles Tournament warm up event! Full details on the flyers below.

We had 72 players in attendance for our 24th annual Wichita Ice Bowl.  Not even a hint of winter, but quite an enjoyable day.  About 50 degrees when we started and it warmed up to 70 degrees for a high!  The wind was reported at 24mph gusting 41 mph, but it didn’t feel nearly that intense on the course thanks to all the trees.  Luckily most of the long holes were going with the wind direction.  The wind made for some interesting shots, but all in all a great day to be disc golfing!

I want to offer my sincere thanks, which is due to all the volunteers that helped make this event another huge success. I want to thank Jerry Sherwood, Jehramy Heckman, and the others who got baskets on & off the course without incident. And thanks for pulling all the flags.  Thanks to everyone who brought baskets.  Thanks to Bob Decker, Adam Hartley, and Jeff Laha, who helped with registration & pay-outs. Thanks to those who helped with the scorecards.  Thanks to those who donated CTP and raffle prizes, including Crispin Carrasco and Chris Smith.  Thanks are especially due to all the ladies who served us all and cleaned up after us.  Didi Schoenhofer, Pam Paulson, Kenni, and Mellisa: thank you!  Thanks to Steve Volbruck for the prizes he gave each of them.  Thanks to all who brought food for the potluck.  I tried 3 chilis this year: Russ’s, Pam’s, and Didi’s.  They all get top marks; it would be hard to pick the best.  Russ’s was HOT but good!

Thanks are due to our sponsors. Mark Wilson getting Freddy's Frozen Custard on board was a huge help. Please thank them for sponsoring when you go to use your meal voucher. Thanks also to Mark for receiving sponsorship from US Tool Grinding.  Great job and I hope others consider asking for sponsorship next year.  Fox and Hound again gave us a Party Card for the event.  Our biggest “sponsor” this year was Buddy Kassner, who wrote a $400 check to the food bank!  Thanks, Buddy!   Bob with Heibert & Decker CPA's gave $100 donation yet again and Bob helped with many preparations this year and every year.  The single biggest source for our donation comes from everyone who purchase raffle tickets.  The best part of the raffle was when Bob, who is notorious for winning the grand prize, won the Innova Traveler, and then gave it back to be raffled to another winner!

I’ll try to post all the results soon and we’ll be working on figuring up the official donation amount.  I will let everyone know as soon as I can, but it looks like it was no doubt another very successful year!  Thanks to everyone for coming, and being so generous to the cause of feeding the hungry.  The best part of this event is you all, coming together in the name of helping those in need. That’s awesome to be a part of!  Congrats to all the winners; I hope everyone had fun.  And I hope to see everyone back again next year.

Michael Schoenhofer
